Redhill Primary Academy, Priorslee, Telford

Project Specifications

This distinctive nursery designed by BCHN Architects to encapsulate a safe green play space in Telford has been ‘Highly Commended’ for the ‘Best Public or Community Building’ as part of the LABC Building Excellence Awards in collaboration with BCHN Architects, Thomas Telford Multi-Academy Trust, Ridge & Partners LLP, Synergy and Redhill Primary Academy.

Bright and light nursery

The £1.4 million state-of-the-art build featured an external skin of buff brick above a grey brick plinth line, a glass lantern roof light, sliding wall to sub-divide the space and a glulam timber canopy to provide cover for outdoor play areas. It replaced a prefabricated nursery at the Redhill Primary Academy, which was demolished as part of the project.

As with many school projects, the team was working in a busy school environment throughout this build.  We worked closely with the Head Teacher to plan work accordingly, firstly installing a temporary nursery building, then demolishing the old nursery. This made way for the careful construction of a new single-storey, steel framed nursery, designed by Shrewsbury based architects Baart Harries Newall

Outstanding facilities

The project delivered outstanding facilities for children who start their academic life at Redhill Primary Academy, which forms part of the Thomas Telford Multi Academy Trust.

Testimonials

"It’s vital that new builds inspire future generations to take an interest in the built environment and by working collaboratively with schools and architects, we can be part of that."
